Daily Devotional--12/24/09

1 John 3:11-14

Love One Another

11This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

From the very beginning John has encouraged us to "love one another."

  • Why do you think that John chose the illustration of Cain and Abel when he was discussing loving your brother?
  • According to John, why did Cain murder his brother? From our study earlier this week, how would you say that Cain came to "belong to the evil one?"
  • How can a person know that he or she has passed from death unto life?
  • About what should believers not be surprised? Why did John feel it important to include this?
